Medvedev: “100% Accident” – So Why Was He Defaulted?
Daniil Medvedev says it was a “100% accident”. The tournament said it was a default. After hitting a ball that struck a spectator in the face while trailing Novak Djokovic 5-7, 3-5, 15-15 at the China Open, Medvedev was disqualified from the semi-final. Medvedev disqualification explained: what the ATP rule says, Djokovic’s reaction, the money and ranking points lost, and what it means for the race to the ATP Finals in Turin.
Medvedev: “Terribly sorry to the spectator… 100% accident. You can see that I didn’t hit the ball in anger.” Djokovic, defaulted at the 2020 US Open for hitting a line judge: “I know exactly how it feels.”
Sportico reports the default cost Medvedev roughly $220,000 and 200 ranking points, the second costliest default in pro tennis, and he was eighth in the year-to-date rankings only 330 points clear of Alex de Minaur. We also cover the Rublev and Shapovalov appeals and Medvedev’s Shanghai run after the incident.
Should the default have been a warning and a fine? Tell us in the comments.
