We’ve always assumed insects are tiny biological machines—creatures that react, but never truly experience.
But what if that assumption is wrong?
Bees can learn surprisingly complex concepts, including the numerical idea of zero. Researchers have also found evidence that bees can change their behavior depending on previous experiences, make motivational trade-offs, and respond differently to rewarding and harmful situations.
In 2024, the New York Declaration on Animal Consciousness stated that there is a realistic possibility of conscious experience in many invertebrates, including insects. This does not prove that insects are conscious—but it does mean the question can no longer be dismissed so easily.
So when you look at a bee, fly, ant, or other tiny insect… are you looking at a machine?
Or could there actually be someone in there?
