In May 1787, eleven ships left Portsmouth with more than fifteen hundred people on board, about half of them convicts. Eight months later they dropped anchor on the east coast of Australia. We follow the First Fleet day by day across the map, and then keep counting the years until a colony becomes a country. Arthur Phillip, Tenerife, Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town and the Southern Ocean, Sydney Cove, the Aboriginal nations who were already there, the Blue Mountains, Tasmania, the gold rush at Ballarat, Melbourne, the last convict ship at Fremantle and the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. On this long clock, which single moment do you think changed Australia the most? If you like watching people move across the map, hit like and subscribe for more migrations in motion.
