Created in the 1980s by German guitar tech Gerd Anke and toolmaker Michael Dubach, the Plek is a computer-controlled precision fret leveling and setup system that scans a guitar under actual playing conditions — strung and tuned to pitch — capturing over 6,000 data points across the fingerboard and frets. It then executes a virtual fret dress, leveling and crowning each fret to within one-thousandth of an inch — a tolerance no human hand can match. The result is a guitar that plays with uncanny evenness and clarity across every position on the neck, with lower action, zero fret buzz, and perfect intonation from the open strings to the highest positions. The world premiere of that particular pairing, as far as we know. About Joel DiMauro Joel DiMauro is one of the most exciting young luthiers working in America today. Based in Capitola, California — from a sunlit workshop overlooking Capitola Village — he began building nylon-string guitars in 2012, studying one-on-one with Fort Bragg luthier Brian Burns. He builds two or three instruments per year entirely by hand, and does not take commissions — he builds what inspires him and sells when the guitar is finished. A career firefighter with the Santa Cruz Fire Department, DiMauro brings the same precision and commitment to his workshop that he brings to the station. His guitars have been carried by Sylvan Music in Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz Guitar Company, Gryphon Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto, Guitar Solo in San Francisco, and Bourgeois Guitars in Maine — a roster that places him in very distinguished company for a maker still in the early chapters of his career. He recently acquired a collection of highly aged, premium tonewoods from his neighbor Kenny Hill — the Ben Lomond luthier who built the Hill Guitar Company into one of America's most respected classical guitar workshops — ensuring that the next generation of DiMauro instruments will be built on some of the finest raw materials available anywhere. About the Program: Sons de Carrilhões (Sounds of Bells) by João Pernambuco (1883–1947) opens the set. João Teixeira Guimarães — known as João Pernambuco — was a self-taught guitarist who composed over 100 pieces for guitar in various styles, today ranking among the standard repertoire for guitarists excelling in choro. He wrote Sons de Carrilhões inspired by the sounds of oxcart chimes he heard constantly in his childhood in the backlands of Jatobá. Pernambuco recorded the piece in 1926, and it was first published in notation in the 1930s. A choro-maxixe in Drop D, its cascading bell-like harmonics and lively Brazilian rhythms have made it one of the most beloved and immediately recognizable pieces in the entire classical guitar repertoire. Cançó del Lladre (Song of the Thief) — a Catalan folk song arranged for solo guitar by Miguel Llobet (1878–1938) — closes the set. A student of Francisco Tárrega and one of the great virtuosos of the early 20th century, Llobet's Catalan folk arrangements are among the most lyrical and enduring works in the repertoire. This one tells the story of a thief sentenced to death — his ordinary childhood, his turn toward crime, and a thread of hope woven through the sadness.
