AfriCOBRA: A Legacy of Art, Identity & Empowerment | MOCA North Miami In 1968, a group of Black artists in Chicago came together with a powerful vision: to create art that celebrated Black identity, culture, unity, and empowerment. They became AfriCOBRA (African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists), an influential artist collective whose bold colors, powerful imagery, and socially conscious work helped define the visual language of the Black Arts Movement. Founded by Jeff Donaldson, Jae Jarrell, Wadsworth Jarrell, Barbara Jones-Hogu, and Gerald Williams, AfriCOBRA challenged traditional artistic conventions and created a lasting legacy that continues to influence generations of artists. For its 30th anniversary celebration, A Night in Paradise: LEGACY 30, the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) honored the AfriCOBRA collective for its extraordinary contributions to contemporary art, cultural expression, and community empowerment. MissionTeller had the privilege of producing this honoree tribute film celebrating the collective's history, artistic vision, and enduring impact. MOCA's relationship with AfriCOBRA includes the landmark 2018 exhibition AfriCOBRA: Messages to the People, followed by AfriCOBRA: Nation Time, presented as an official collateral event of the 2019 Venice Biennale.
