Can a sport rim survive dynamic loading without hitting resonance? In this ANSYS simulation, we investigate the dynamic behavior of a sport rim using a complete Structural → Modal → Harmonic Response analysis.
We start with realistic boundary conditions, inflation pressure, and rotational velocity to create a pre-stressed operating condition. Then we extract the first six natural frequencies and mode shapes before applying a 1000 N harmonic excitation to evaluate deformation, von Mises stress, and reaction forces across the frequency range.
The key question: Is the sport rim safe from resonance?
The results show that the rim is sufficiently far from critical resonance under the conditions simulated, while the harmonic reaction forces remain acceptable.
In the next simulation, we introduce wheel imbalance and compare it with the ideal balanced rim. Will imbalance change the natural frequencies, stresses, deformation, or reaction forces?
