The poster showed a young female singer standing beneath a stage light. One hand held a microphone. Her face was turned toward the audience. For several weeks, nobody paid much attention to it. Then one night, after the club had closed, a stagehand noticed something strange. The girl in the poster was looking in a different direction. He assumed he remembered it wrong. The next evening, another employee noticed that her hand had moved. The microphone was now lower. Her head was turned farther toward the edge of the poster. Someone took a photograph. The following night, they compared it. The image had changed again. The girl was no longer facing the audience. She appeared to be looking outside the poster. At something in the hallway. Nobody had replaced it. Nobody had touched it. The paper was still nailed to the same wall. Then the singer featured on the poster arrived at the club. She stood beside the image while one of the musicians took a photograph. The two women looked identical. But their poses did not. The real singer was facing the camera. The girl in the poster was looking directly at her. After that night, the changes became easier to see. Her shoulders shifted. Her hand moved closer to the edge. Her microphone disappeared. Then part of her body moved beyond the printed stage behind her. Every new photograph showed her slightly farther from where she had originally stood. The club staff began photographing the poster every night before closing. Night one. She was near the microphone. Night two. She was beside the curtain. Night three. She was almost outside the printed frame. On the fourth night, the stage inside the poster was empty. The girl was gone. No tear. No damaged ink. No missing section of paper. Just an empty stage beneath the same printed lights. That same evening, the club recorded a live set from an unknown local garage band. Near the end of the tape, a female voice can be heard singing from somewhere offstage. Nobody remembered a woman joining the performance. The original poster was never found again. Only a handful of photographs were said to survive. On the back of the final photograph, someone had written: “APRIL 1966” And underneath: “SHE WASN’T THERE THE NEXT NIGHT.” This archive is a fictional reconstruction inspired by the underground psychedelic, surf and garage rock culture of the mid-1960s.
