Hardwood Media Console | Hand-Carved Drawer Faces | Full Build Process

I designed and built this TV cabinet for our lounge room in 2023 to replace one of the last pieces of flat-pack furniture we had in the house. Saying this was more work than I expected would be a massive understatement. Honestly, this is probably the first project I’m uploading where I wouldn't even call it a DIY — I’m not sure I could "do it myself" again! The cabinet is constructed from local messmate timber (an Australian eucalyptus hardwood) and finished with hardwax oil. It features two removable, grain-matched sliding doors, four grain-matched push-to-open drawers with a hand-carved naguri texture, and a continuous waterfall edge around the top and sides of the mitre-joined frame. The carving on the drawers was a bit of an afterthought. Once the initial build was complete, it felt like it needed something extra. Inspired by traditional Japanese naguri patterns, I decided to carve the drawer faces by hand — with nothing to lose but a length of timber (and the skin off my hands). I’m absolutely thrilled with how it turned out, though after doing it all by hand, I can see why most people would reach for power tools for this kind of work! The naguri pattern even ended up inspiring the engagement ring I had made late last year — and some people joke that she only said yes because of that texture.
