The Kathmandu Valley is encircled by eight sacred shrines dedicated to the mother goddesses, collectively known as the Asta Matrika or Ajima. These powerful goddesses protect the boundaries between order and chaos, the inner and outer worlds, and the visible and invisible realms. Representing different manifestations of the Great Goddess in her supreme power, they work together as a divine collective to safeguard harmony and balance. The eight goddesses are Brahmayani, Rudrayani, Barahi, Kumari, Mahalaxmi, Baisnavi, Indrayani, Chamunda.
