Lufthansa Airbus A340-600 farewell trip from Frankfurt (FRA) to Washington-Dulles (IAD). The Airbus A340-600 is one of the most iconic widebody airliners ever built. The longest and highest-capacity variant of the four-engined A340 family, it struggled to gain market share over the vastly more popular Boeing 777-300ER, with which it directly competed. The innate fuel efficiency advantage of the twin-engine Boeing 777 proved to be an essentially insurmountable competitive hurdle for the A340-600. When it was introduced in 2001, it was the longest commercial aircraft in existence at 247' 3", until the 747-8 debuted in 2010. Nevertheless, German flag carrier Lufthansa, which has historically relied on a mainly four-engined long-haul fleet, purchased 24 A340-600s (complementing a fleet of 19 A340-300s), and was the largest operator. However, only 4 remain in the fleet as of October 2026, flying exclusively between Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) and both Washington-Dulles (IAD) and New York-John F. Kennedy (JFK) airports. These last four aircraft will be retired in the next few days, and will be replaced by Airbus A350-1000s for the 2027 summer schedule. Nevertheless, (ironically) the much older A340-300s powered (or notoriously underpowered) by CFM56 engines will remain in service at Lufthansa for at least a few more years. A lack of spare parts for the A340-600's unique Rolls-Royce Trent 500 engines and relative poor fuel efficiency, has led to its retirement ahead of the -300s this month.
