Commissioned by Manger Musikklag with support from The Norwegian Composer's Fund in 2010-2011, 'Old Licks Bluesed Up' was their choice for the 2011 European Brass Band Championship in Montreux, conducted by Peter S. Szilvay. A Concert Band version was also commissioned in 2021 by Frode Amundsen and Sarpsborg Janitsjarkorps. The title and 'old' in the movements reference past music, while 'licks' draws from blues, rock, and jazz, denoting arpeggios, scales, and riffs used in improvisation. 'Toccata' is a dynamic genre from baroque keyboard music, and 'ritornell' signifies a recurring theme in the baroque ritornello form.
