There is a floor idea from Japan worth investigating. The deep litter method for chickens raises a practical question: can better litter management reduce chicken coop smell without promising a self-cleaning floor? Wet bedding, leaking drinkers and poor ventilation can undermine your work and put feed money at risk. This video explores what living microbial cultures and a suitable mineral amendment may contribute, and why neither replaces daily management. You will learn how to evaluate the method before committing your whole flock or assuming that every bottled culture works the same way.
The central research comes from a 35-day broiler trial in Poland, not proof of months without odor. Researchers tested effective microorganisms and zeolite together, so the findings cannot tell us what either ingredient achieved alone. As a trained veterinary paraprofessional with more than five years of experience, I explain the findings in plain language, separate the experimental setup from product-label instructions, and show what to monitor on your own farm. The goal is a better-informed litter decision, not guaranteed disease prevention, lower mortality or profit. Start with moisture control, ventilation and sound biosecurity, then assess any additional treatment against its cost and measured results.
IN THIS VIDEO:
• Why wet chicken litter and alkalinity matter for ammonia
• What the combined microbial and zeolite treatment achieved
• How bedding, drinkers, airflow and stocking density affect litter
• Why product-specific instructions matter more than homemade recipes
• How to compare litter moisture, feed use, mortality and costs
RESEARCH AND SOURCES:
Animals, 2026: A controlled broiler trial reported lower average airborne ammonia with the combined treatment, from 4.63 to 2.13 parts per million, approximately 54% lower.

Evidence note: One study, with treatments housed in separate rooms. Room effects cannot be ruled out. Average treated litter remained alkaline. These findings do not establish pathogen elimination, months of odor control or results for laying hens and indigenous chickens.
Follow the label for the specific litter product. No Kenyan supplier dilution ratios or home-activation recipe are provided here. Litter treatments do not replace ventilation, cleaning, appropriate disinfection, vaccination or veterinary care.
This video is for education. If not sure, always consult with a qualified poultry nutritionist or veterinarian before changing feed or treatment.
