Location: Croydon, South London
Onions: Senshyu Yellow (Japanese overwintering variety) Sowed mid-August, planted out on 20th September.
Garlic: Planted on Friday, 25th September.
Interplanting: Lettuce interplanted alongside the crops to maximise space and diversity
Soil Regeneration & Bed Prep Method
To breathe life back into the beds (especially the garlic bed, which was previously quite nutrient-depleted), a multi-layered organic lasagna method was used:
Base Layer: Refreshed the beds using a generous layer of kitchen scraps and organic matter.
Structure: Added a layer of cardboard to suppress weeds and encourage fungal breakdown.
Nutrition: Incorporated rich horse manure.
Cover: Topped back up with the original compost.
Finished with a top layer of worm castings to kickstart microbial life and attract earthworms.
Plans are underway to replicate this exact regenerative process for a couple more beds this growing season.
