Read the CSSA Journal article online for free here: https://bioone.org/journals/cactus-an... I traced wild-collected Agave utahensis from protected desert habitat to nursery shelves. What I found is a completely legal, completely unregulated market, and three converging threats that could push this species past the point of recovery. I visited a legal salvage operation, examined evidence of possible poaching on one of the most famous agave in habitat, and in this video I break down the four signs that a plant was wild-collected rather than seed-grown. Then I lay out what's actually at stake: climate compressing sky-island habitat, development breaking ground on the edges of wild populations, and market demand with zero tracking or provenance requirements. How to tell if your agave was wild-collected: → Severely pruned, chopped root system → Compact, vertical "ball-type" growth from decades of UV/drought stress → Ring of dried yellow leaves around the base → Large, mature specimen from a seller with no documented growing history → Labeled eborispina but terminal spines under 10 cm If you can't verify it's seed-grown, don't buy it.
