EP Desk, Rumgong, September 4, 2026: Biiyi Laryi Pangkeng Football Club emerged champions of the 3rd Edition of the Lt. Tapak Jonnom Memorial Football Trophy Tournament-2026, defeating Gumin Hoyin 5–3 in a penalty shootout at Digong Tatak Regional Playground, Rumgong. The tournament, organised by the Solung Sports Committee, Rumgong, under the aegis of the District Football Association (DFA), Siang District, Boleng, concluded with a closing ceremony on September 3. The victory marked Biiyi Laryi Pangkeng Football Club’s third consecutive championship, highlighting the team’s consistency and competitive spirit. The champion team received a cash prize of ₹1 lakh, while the runner-up, Gumin Hoyin, was awarded ₹70,000. The tournament was organised in memory of Lt. Tapak Jonnom, who was remembered during the closing ceremony for his contributions to education, guidance to students and his lasting connection with the people of Rumgong. Speaking at the closing ceremony, Shri Tajing Jonnom, Director, Panchayati Raj, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, recalled the journey of the memorial tournament from its beginning to the present. He said the tournament has continued peacefully over the years and has brought people together while keeping the memory of Lt. Tapak Jonnom alive. He expressed gratitude to those who supported the tournament through sponsorship and participation, including Adv. Oni Mibang, Tatan Komut and Tamo Ketan, while also appreciating the Gaon Buras and community members for extending their support to the event. Shri Tahung Jerang remembered Lt. Tapak Jonnom as a good person and prayed for his soul to rest in peace. He said that even today, people in Rumgong remember him with respect and affection. Recalling his personal memories, Shri Tabang Gao said Lt. Tapak Jonnom’s teachings and guidance remained deeply memorable. He recalled how Jonnom encouraged students to pursue education outside the area and supported them when they faced difficulties, including a lack of basic necessities such as proper clothing. He expressed gratitude for the values and lessons imparted by Jonnom and prayed for his soul to rest in peace. The speakers also appreciated the organisers and sponsors for promoting unity, teamwork and sportsmanship through the tournament. Dr. Jonny Darang, DMO, Boleng, Siang District, highlighted the growing opportunities available through sports. He noted that while education was traditionally considered the primary path to a better future, talented youngsters can now also build careers and livelihoods through sports. He urged the DFA and sports stakeholders to identify promising players and provide them with opportunities to compete at higher levels, enabling talented athletes from the Adi community to represent Arunachal Pradesh on bigger platforms. The closing ceremony also acknowledged the continued support of Smt. Tomik Jamoh Jonnom, who has sponsored the memorial tournament for the third consecutive time. The event was attended by several dignitaries and special invitees, including Er.
