Event: Tafsīr of Sūra Yūsuf - Ramadan Series Location: Hussaini Association of Calgary Date: 13 March 2026 / 23 Ramadan 1448 You must exert effort! When you run toward Allah, Allah opens the door: وَمَن يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَل لَّهُ مَخْرَجًا “Whoever is mindful of Allah, He will make for him a way out.” (65:2) The escape from sin requires two things: Inner refuge: saying 'maʿādh Allāh" Outer action: physically distancing yourself from the sin. The fact that Prophet Yūsuf did both is actually very extraordinary. Allamah Tabatabaei mentions a few points regarding his circumstances to explain why: 1. He was at the peak of youth Youth naturally carries a strong drive toward desire. 2. He himself was extremely handsome When a person possesses beauty, they are often more inclined toward indulgence. On the Day of Judgment, Yūsuf will stand as proof against those youth who fell into sin. 3. He lived in luxury He was not struggling for survival. He lived in a palace surrounded by beauty and comfort. Wealth and affluence fuels desires. The saying goes: المال مادة الشهوات “Wealth is the fuel of desires.” A person worried about tonight’s dinner is not thinking about luxuries. But when comfort arrives, new desires awaken. 4. Zalīkhā herself was young and beautiful 5. She had adorned herself in the most attractive way 6. She openly expressed love for him 7. She had shown him kindness for years She had raised him and treated him with generosity. 8. The opportunity required no effort; she was offering herself. 9. They were completely alone The doors were locked and the curtains were drawn. There was no witness and no interruption. 10. Accepting her could bring enormous worldly gain This relationship could have secured his future in the palace and given him access to wealth and influence. 11. Refusing her carried serious consequences Rejecting a powerful woman in a palace was dangerous. Yet despite all these pressures, Prophet Yūsuf did not falter. His faith in Allah protected him from a situation that could have crushed a mountain. The Prophets did not lack desires. In fact, their desires were fully human. But because they see reality clearly, sin does not even appear attractive to them.
