Sliding Away

Today’s Quick’n Dirty jam, “Sliding Away,” investigates that peculiar stage of relaxation where enlightenment and unconsciousness become difficult to distinguish. C harmonic major initially offers respectable C-major furniture, then quietly removes one leg with A♭; from there, A♭° and F° ensure that even lying perfectly still feels suspiciously mobile. He has been inactive, hypnotised and is proudly clearing his mind — apparently so thoroughly that the mind itself leaves the premises. She is less impressed: from her considerably more animated melodic viewpoint, his body is dancing while its owner claims to be relaxing. The arrangement joins the diagnosis: sparse slow chords leave enormous gaps, monosynths wander between registers, then the fast section becomes almost hypnotically repetitive before both lines lose their coordinates in bar four. Even the bass eventually abandons C for A♭–G–F. This isn't falling asleep. It’s consciousness quietly discovering the emergency exit.
