Dr. Dave on Zyprexa

Zyprexa (olanzapine) is a medication that I use as a dopamine suppressor. As with all of my medications, the exact mechanism of action is unknown. But we believe that it works in the dopamine system, and I use it when I want to help a patient by reducing dopamine activity. It is officially authorized as an "anti-psychotic." It is very important to understand that, in an "off label" fashion, we help patients every day with this medication, even when they do not suffer psychotic symptoms.
