Longin' for Sabbath is one of my favorite songs of all time, and I am proud to share this original Western Swing song with you. I wrote this song for anyone who has ever worked themselves weary, pushed through another long day, and dreamed of finding a little peace and quiet beneath the wide open skies.
Blending the spirit of traditional Western swing, classic cowboy music, country storytelling, and heartfelt country gospel influences, Longin' for Sabbath tells the story of a tired cowboy who is longing for rest. With dusty trails, muddy coffee, mountain creeks, pine trees, whippoorwills, and the peaceful shade of a juniper hill, this song paints a picture of a simpler life where a weary soul can finally slow down and breathe.
Sometimes a man is not looking for gold, glory, or riches. Sometimes all he wants is a quiet place to lay his head, the sound of a running creek, the stars overhead, and one blessed day without another mile to ride. That is the heart of this song. It is a Western swing tribute to the hardworking cowboy, the simple pleasures of life, and the deep human longing for rest.
As a songwriter, I love songs that tell a story and bring a place, a feeling, and a memory to life. I hope Longin' for Sabbath takes you back to the golden age of cowboy songs, traditional country music, Western swing, and the timeless sounds of the American West.
If you enjoy classic Western swing, cowboy ballads, old fashioned country music, traditional country songwriting, and songs about faith, life, and finding peace, I hope this one becomes a favorite of yours, too.

LONGIN' FOR SABBATH
Written by Rickey Phipps
Verse 1
I’m gettin’ just enough slumber to drift through the light
A-stumbling on through the day
I’m dragging my spurs through the dust and the dirt
While the trail seems to fade into gray
There’s mud in my coffee and ghosts in my dreams
And a spirit that’s weary and sad
Oh, I’m not asking for silver or riches, dear Lord
Just the peace that I formerly had.
Chorus
I’m a-longing for Sabbath, I’m a-praying for rest
A quiet place to pillow my head
Where the cool, silver whisper of a mountain creek flows
And the pine boughs swing overhead
No cattle to gather, no race to be won
Just a long, lazy sleep in the sun
I don’t need the glories of Heaven tonight
I just need a Sabbath.
Verse 2
The rooster, he hollers before the stars fade
And the sun starts to burn in my eyes
I’m chasing the hours and losing the race
’Neath these lonesome and wide-open skies
The world keeps a-shouting, “Ride on, son, ride on!”
But my soul whispers, “Pardner, sit still”
I’d trade a week’s wages for one quiet hour
In the shade of a juniper hill.
Bridge
Let me hear the shy whippoorwill call to the dusk
While the river hums a low, lonesome tune
Let me bed down beneath the Creator’s blue tent
And wake up at the high-riding noon
No master to answer, no fences to mend
No promises I’m hurried to keep
Just me and the breeze through the sycamore leaves
And a whole day for dreaming and sleep.
Final Chorus
I need me a Sabbath, I’m a-yearning for rest
A quiet place to pillow my head
I need the soft whisper of a clear, running creek
And the stars shining bright overhead
No working, no worrying, no miles left to run
Just the stillness when daylight is done...
Lord, I don’t need all of Heaven tonight
I just need...
...a Sabbath.
