Open the front door of an American home in 1975 and the first thing that hits you is the
color. Harvest gold. Avocado green. Burnt orange. And under your feet, shag carpet so deep
they sold a rake to comb it.
In this video we take a tour, room by room, through a typical 1970s American home. The
plastic-covered sofa nobody ever actually felt. The console TV the size of a dresser that
you changed with a dial. The avocado refrigerator that lasted 25 years. The harvest gold
toilet. The waterbed. The wall phone with the fifteen-foot tangled cord. The macramé owls.
The catalog every kid circled at Christmas. The garage fridge. And the sounds and smells you
haven't thought about in decades but will remember instantly.
And honestly: it wasn't all groovy. The paneling was cheap, the plastic couch was
miserable, everybody smoked indoors, and one bathroom served a family of six with no AC in
July.
But here's what we're really nostalgic for — and it isn't the harvest gold. That house was
full. The whole family in a few small rooms, together, because there was nowhere else to
disappear to. Our homes today are bigger and cooler and further apart. That crowded brown
shag-carpeted house had the one thing you can't buy: everybody, in the same room.
What color was YOUR kitchen? Did you have the plastic on the couch, the waterbed, the
paneling? What object did I miss? Comments below — let's rebuild the whole house together.
