Larry, The Downing Street Cat - That Was the Week That Was

Another week has scampered past, and, rather like a cat discovering that someone has left a cupboard door open, it has managed to be surprisingly busy. First up, I uploaded a selection of paintings and asked you, lovely people, to vote for your favourites. What a response. Honestly, I was quite overwhelmed. There was, however, one small administrative difficulty. Dave had forgotten to number the pictures. I had to reprimand him. He muttered something about being busy with other work, which is the sort of excuse humans have been making since the invention of the wheel. I gave him a Paddington hard stare. He stopped muttering. I think the message got through. Anyway, we are now down to the final six, so it is time for Round Two of the voting. And, credit where it is due, Dave has numbered them this time. Still, better late than never. Meanwhile, the Bayeux Tapestry has finally been unveiled to the great British public, and very impressive it all looked too. There are horses, dogs, lions, leopards, foxes and even dragons. More than 500 animals and birds in all. Five hundred. And yet, somehow, not one domestic cat. I should like to know how that happened. We were already established as creatures of considerable cultural importance by then. The Egyptians had the good sense to worship us, and that was long before Harold went wandering off towards Hastings in 1066. So how, exactly, did the tapestry committee overlook us? One begins to suspect an anti-cat agenda. I shall be keeping an eye on the situation. Obviously. They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I mention this only because I have noticed that Bambi has recently started doing his own weekly round-up. I don't mind in the slightest. In fact, I think it is a splendid idea. And, between you and me, he is actually rather good at those little presentations of his. Naturally, I would never tell him that. We have to maintain standards. There has also been some new artwork unveiled just up the road from me here in Westminster. The latest sculpture has taken its place on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square. For those who enjoy a little history with their sightseeing, the Fourth Plinth was originally intended to carry an equestrian statue of William IV. Unfortunately, the money ran out, which is one of those peculiarly British ways of ending a grand national project. So it sat empty for more than 150 years. It is now occupied by Lady in Blue, by New York artist Tschabalala Self. It is the 16th artwork to take up residence on the plinth since 1998. I haven't yet decided what I think of it. Naturally, I shall reserve judgement until I have inspected it properly. Finally, I wanted to say something about the response to my 9/11 post on Friday. I was genuinely moved by all your comments. So many of you shared your memories of where you were and what you were doing on that terrible day. Reading those stories was both heartbreaking and incredibly powerful. Thank you for taking the time to share them. It is easy, after all these years, to think of events like that simply as dates in history. But then someone tells you where they were standing, who they were with, what they saw or what they heard, and suddenly history becomes personal again. So thank you. And on that rather more serious note, I think that is about it. That was the week, that was.
