Ghana’s fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, is entering another major phase as government intensifies enforcement and strengthens international cooperation. Ghana’s Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and China’s Ministry of Natural Resources have agreed on a three-point strategy aimed at tackling illegal mining, strengthening technical cooperation in geological surveys and promoting responsible investment in Ghana’s mining sector. Ghana’s Ambassador to China, Kojo Bonsu, says the Chinese government is concerned about illegal mining activities in Ghana, including activities linked to some Chinese nationals. He also says President Xi Jinping has assigned a provincial official to engage Ghana’s government on urgent efforts to address the galamsey menace. Meanwhile, former presidential candidate Alan Kyerematen has proposed a one-year ban on small-scale mining as part of efforts to combat illegal mining. On the ground, a major NAIMOS operation in Denkyira Akwaboso and parts of Upper Denkyira East and West reportedly resulted in several excavators being seized and transported away, while other mining equipment was destroyed. The Ghana Armed Forces has also apprehended individuals accused of impersonating National Security, police and military personnel, allegedly to extort money from illegal miners.
