Why You Read People So Well (And Why It Never Makes You Safe)
In this video, we break down the psychology of reading people, using Kahneman
and Klein's 2009 paper on when intuition can be trusted, Bond and DePaulo's
meta-analyses of deception accuracy across 24,000 people, DePaulo's finding
that confidence and accuracy correlate at almost zero, and Kenneth Dodge's
research on hostile attribution bias.
You are not too sensitive. You built a sophisticated instrument in a house
where the alarms had to be that sensitive. What it never had was a
calibration - because an unpredictable environment fails both conditions
under which intuition can be learned, no matter how many decades you
practise.
Then five things that actually work: separate the signal from the story,
grade your reads, ask the question out loud, write down the false alarms,
and name the arithmetic you're running.
Which of the five do you skip the most? Tell me in the comments. I read every
one of them.
