A historic Jewish Sabbath song that brings together two Hebrew prayers expressing longing for Jerusalem and hope for its restoration.
“Mikdash Melech” (“Sanctuary of the King”) comes from Lecha Dodi, a hymn written in 16th-century Safed by Rabbi Shlomo Alkabetz and traditionally sung on Friday evenings to welcome the Jewish Sabbath. The words call on Jerusalem to rise from suffering and receive divine compassion. “Mimkomcha” (“From Your Place”) comes from the Sabbath morning prayer and expresses the longing for God's presence to be revealed in Jerusalem.
The melody was composed by Yechezkel Shraga Rottenberg (1899–1942), a composer born in Kraków, Poland, who served as a close assistant and personal secretary to Rabbi Ben Zion Halberstam, the spiritual leader of the Jewish community in bobowa, Poland. Rottenberg and his children were murdered at Bełżec during the Holocaust, but his musical legacy lives on.
