The cartoon companion to our Hiawatha episode. In Canton, South Dakota, a granite marker tells the story of the Hiawatha Asylum — the federal government's asylum for American Indians, created by the Act of March 3, 1899. People were sent there from tribes all over the country — some ill, some simply in the way, some for reasons no record explains. Even the basics come down two ways, and we keep them open. The marker says the first patient arrived in 1902; the record says January 7, 1903. The stone says more than 370 people were confined there; research counts 800 to 860 — a conflict nobody has reconciled. The cemetery burials documented number 121 to 122; the true total is not known. Today the asylum is gone, and the cemetery ground lies by the golf course in Canton. No patient is named in this episode. The questions it leaves behind are the story. Dr. Silk's 1933 report found that over one-third of the people at Hiawatha never should have been sent there. How many others left no record at all? Thank you for watching — we appreciate every view.
