Why can a golfer understand exactly what an instructor wants—and still be unable to repeat it?
Paul Reber, a professor of psychology at @NorthwesternU, joins Walter Lis on the Off Course podcast to explain the neuroscience behind skill learning, implicit memory and automatic performance.
Reber describes why factual knowledge and physical skills are supported by different systems in the brain. An instructor can explain where to place the club, shift your weight or position your arms, but that conscious understanding does not automatically become a reliable golf swing. The brain’s motor systems require repeated experience to gradually reorganize how the movement is performed.
The conversation explores:
• The difference between knowing something and being able to do it
• Why practice makes a movement permanent—not necessarily perfect
• What “muscle memory” really means
• Why 50–60 good repetitions may only begin the learning process
• Whether adults can continue learning complex skills as they age
• How conscious swing thoughts can interfere with expert performance
• What may be happening in the brain when a golfer chokes under pressure
• Why the brain is always learning from the experiences around us
Golf provides the starting point, but the larger subject is how human beings learn complex skills—and why lasting improvement requires much more than simply understanding the correct instructions.
