I recently came across a study that tracked hundreds of seniors over a twenty-year period. It found that grandparents who actively help out with childcare actually wind up living significantly longer than those who don’t—in fact, they had a 37% lower risk of an early death. Running around after a toddler keeps your mind sharp and gives you a deep sense of purpose. But anyone who has actually watched their grandkids for any length of time knows that this statistic leaves out a very important piece of information: helping out can be a massive, complicated, and chaotic experience. The chaos usually starts the day you retire because of an unwritten rule—or a sort of family law—that assumes your calendar is automatically free for default babysitting, school pickups, and sick days. Before you know it, your hard-earned freedom starts to feel like an exhausting, unpaid, high-stress job.In this video, I’m sharing why setting boundaries with your own adult children isn't selfish—it's an absolute necessity. We already did our forty years of strict, rigid parenting, and we handed that job over to our kids. Our job now is to protect our quiet time during the week so we have the stamina, patience, and energy to do what grandparents are truly meant to do: step into the chaos, break the rules, spoil the heck out of them, and make lasting memories.I’d love to hear from you. How are you handling the mix of grandparenting, babysitting, and boundaries in your own home? Let’s have a conversation in the comments below! Thanks for sitting down with me for a little while, and I'll see you in the next one. #grandparenting #familyboundaries #retirementlifestyle #intentionalliving
