Humans were breathing smoke on purpose thousands of years before the first cigarette. But when, where, and why did it start?
In this video, we trace the archaeological trail of ancient smoking, from charred tobacco seeds in Peru that are about 12,300 years old, to Scythian burial mounds in the Altai Mountains, to wooden burners in the Pamir Mountains that held high-potency cannabis residue. The evidence is stranger than you'd expect, and it changes how we think about the habit.
In this video:
• Why the earliest smoking was ritual and medicine, not recreation
• The Huaca Prieta discovery in Peru and what it proves
• How Herodotus's "exaggerated" account of the Scythians turned out to be accurate
• Why smoking appeared independently in cultures with no contact with each other
• How colonial plantations and the tobacco industry turned a sacred ritual into a commodity
