📖 The Story of Turtle Island
According to the story, before light ever touched the water, Sky Woman fell through a hole in the heavens and was caught by birds who gently placed her on the back of the Great Turtle.
While animals like the otter failed to reach the bottom of the endless deep, the brave little Muskrat dove down and returned with a single paw full of mud.
Sky Woman took this gift of earth and danced in circles on the turtle's shell, spreading the mud until the land grew wide and formed the world we know. Today, this ancient sea turtle continues to patiently bear the weight of the land, carrying thirteen moons carved into his shell. 🦅
About the Tribal Legend
This profound creation myth originates primarily from the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy, as well as the Anishinaabe and other Algonquian-speaking peoples.
"Turtle Island" is the revered name used by many Indigenous tribes to describe the continent of North America. The thirteen moons carved into the turtle's back directly correspond to the thirteen full moons of the lunar year, serving as a sacred calendar that honors the natural cycles of Mother Earth.
The legend is a beautiful teaching of interconnectedness, illustrating how the smallest creature can spark the creation of a world, and how the earth relies on the quiet, steady sacrifice of nature.⏱️ Video
