Your gas station's sign says one thing. Your engine's intake valves say another.
I looked at 10 of the biggest fuel brands in America and asked one question about each: does it hold the Top Tier license that BMW, GM, Honda, and Toyota created for their own engines, or does it only look like it does? Four earned it. Six are riding on a reputation. And the one that surprised me most is the brand with the most loyal fans in the country.
In this video:
Why the 1990s federal detergent minimum is a floor, not a standard
How direct injection engines changed the rules, and why they never get the "wash" port injection gave valves
The AAA lab study: about 19x more intake valve deposits from non-certified fuel over a simulated 4,000 miles
Why "all gas is the same" is only 80% true, and what happens at the terminal rack
The 6 brands without the license, and the 4 that earned it
Why Costco's cheap fuel can beat premium-priced stations on detergent
Octane vs. detergent: why buying premium for "cleaner fuel" is usually wasted money
The 2-minute check to see if your own station is certified
Not being on the list does not mean the fuel is bad or unsafe. It means the higher detergent dose the automakers asked for isn't guaranteed. The list also changes over time, so always check the official Top Tier site for your zip code instead of trusting old blog posts, including this video in a year.
Fuel does not replace maintenance. Oil changes, spark plugs, and a healthy PCV system still matter.
If this changed how you'll fill up next time, like the video, subscribe, and send it to the one driver you know who has used the same station for 15 years.
Where do you fill up most often? Tell me in the comments.
