The Burj Khalifa does not stand on rock. There is no bedrock under Dubai worth reaching — only sand, weak carbonate stone you can break apart in your hands, and groundwater more corrosive than seawater. So the heaviest building ever raised is held by friction alone, gripping the ground along 194 concrete piles sunk up to fifty metres down. Above them, 330,000 cubic metres of concrete were pushed into the sky through a single pipe the width of a dinner plate — at night, chilled with ice, because the daytime air in Dubai is too hot to pour.
