On October 22, 1844, thousands lifted their eyes to the heavens, waiting for the promised return of Christ; but midnight came, and He did not appear. What actually happened was that Christ entered the Most Holy Place of the heavenly sanctuary, beginning the final phase of His priestly ministry. Their brightest hope became a night of tears, and many turned away in sorrow and confusion. Yet a little company chose not to let disappointment bury their faith. William Miller, though deeply wounded, still held to the blessed hope and resolved to stand until God gave further light: “Today, today, and today, until He comes.” Thus, what seemed to be the end became a deeper call to watch, to wait, and to hope. The hour was not theirs to determine, the promise was still sure: “Behold, I come quickly.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
