Fifteen years ago, the largest tropical peatland on Earth was not on any map. It sits under a swamp in the Republic of the Congo, holding thirty billion tons of carbon, and almost nobody outside the region knows it is there. This 4K travel documentary goes looking for the things this country found late. Not the big Congo. The other one, on the west bank of the river, across the water from Kinshasa. In the next thirty minutes we travel four floors of terrain from Atlantic sand to flooded forest, sit at a forest clearing where western lowland gorillas walk into the open, follow a Lingala word all the way into a French dictionary, and stand on a street in Brazzaville where three colors on a suit is written law. Along the way: the Ebola outbreaks nobody remembers, a park older than the republic that owns it, more forest elephants living outside the fence than inside it, and the first law on the African continent written to protect Indigenous peoples. The Republic of the Congo is one of the least-documented countries in Central Africa, and one of the most misidentified. It shares a name, a river and a language with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and almost every search result about Ebola, cobalt or Virunga belongs to the neighbor, not to this country. This documentary is built entirely around the smaller republic on the west bank. Its geography runs in four steps from the Atlantic to the interior: a coastal plain that pushes forty miles inland, the Mayombe massif, the farmed Niari valley, the sandy Bateke plateaus, and finally the Cuvette, a basin so level that water does not know which way to leave. Underneath the Cuvette lies the Cuvette Centrale peatland, mapped only in twenty seventeen and published in the journal Nature. At fifty six thousand square miles it is larger than England, and the carbon it holds is roughly twenty years of everything the United States burns. The country is also home to Odzala-Kokoua National Park, set aside in nineteen thirty five and added to the world heritage list in twenty twenty three, and to Nouabale-Ndoki, where surveys have counted more forest elephants outside the boundary than inside it. Between two thousand one and two thousand five, four Ebola outbreaks moved through the Cuvette-Ouest region, and the Lossi gorilla sanctuary lost ninety three percent of its habituated animals. Culturally, the film follows Congolese rumba from Cuban dance records to a global heritage listing in twenty twenty one, the word liboke into the Petit Larousse in twenty twenty five, and La Sape, the Brazzaville dress movement whose first rule is three colors and never four.
