#history #maps #persia #geography Every border change of Persia from 550 BC to 2026, event by event. The height of the land shows how many years each place has spent under Persian rule so far; land that was lost stays on the map in grey. The population figure is an estimate of how many people lived in the territory held at the time. The smaller figure under it is the world population in the same year, from the same model. Chapters: 0:00 The Achaemenids (550 BC–331 BC) 1:08 Macedonian Rule (330 BC–248 BC) 1:21 The Parthians (247 BC–AD 223) 2:11 The Sasanians (AD 224–AD 650) 3:33 The Caliphate (AD 651–AD 860) 3:49 The Iranian Intermezzo (AD 861–1055) 4:34 Turks and Mongols (1056–1500) 5:03 The Safavids (1501–1721) 6:10 Nader Shah and the Zands (1722–1788) 6:50 The Qajars (1789–1924) 7:19 Modern Iran (1925–2026) The map follows Persia and Iran under Persian and Iranian dynasties: the Achaemenid, Parthian and Sasanian empires, the Iranian dynasties of the 9th to 11th centuries (Saffarids, Samanids, Buyids), and from 1501 the Safavids, Afsharids, Zands, Qajars, the Pahlavi dynasty and the Islamic Republic. Under Alexander and the Seleucids, under the Caliphate, and under Seljuk, Mongol, Timurid and Turkmen rule there was no Persian state; the map is grey in those years. Foreign occupations in the world wars are not shown as losses. Short conquests (held less than 15 years in total) appear while they last and leave no grey trace.
