A better-looking steering wheel—but more complications than I expected. In this video, I show the steering wheel upgrade process on my 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT63 S and explain the issues we encountered along the way.
The new wheel looks and feels 100% better than the original, but getting everything working comes with additional costs:
• Steering wheel: $1,700
• Installation: approximately $300
• Additional programming for the added control buttons: quoted at $300
• Possible compatible replacement airbag: estimated near $1,000
The original OEM airbag uses two-stage deployment, while the supplied aftermarket airbag uses a single-stage setup. That compatibility issue still needs to be resolved. The added control buttons also aren’t working yet and require programming.
If a replacement airbag is needed, the total could reach approximately $3,300. Is the upgrade worth the expense and troubleshooting? Here’s my experience so far.
Stay tuned for the completed installation and first drive once airbag compatibility is confirmed, the controls work, and the error codes are resolved.
Would you upgrade or keep the OEM wheel? Let me know in the comments.
