Then something crosses the rupture. The first organisms seem almost helpful. They seal leaks, rebuild damaged vessels, and imitate repairs they have witnessed. But every tool, scrap of tissue, and procedure near the breach teaches them more. Soon the station is filling with an alien maintenance ecology that can keep the gates alive while quietly remaking the structure from the inside. With supplies collapsing and a debt contract still binding him to the job, the splicer faces a brutal engineering problem: destroy the intruders and risk losing containment, or depend on a biology that learns from everything it touches.
