Six years after the October 2020 #EndSARS protests, Nigerians are marking the anniversary of the youth-led movement against police brutality, particularly the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). The protests, which began over viral videos of SARS abuses (harassment, extortion, torture, and extrajudicial killings), escalated into nationwide demonstrations demanding police reform, accountability, and better governance. The movement peaked on October 20, 2020, when security forces opened fire on peaceful protesters at Lagos’ Lekki Toll Gate (often called the Lekki massacre). Reports of deaths vary (Amnesty and others cited dozens nationwide; some rights groups put the total higher, including around 56–135 across the country). Judicial panels of inquiry were set up, SARS was disbanded, and the Police Act 2020 was passed, but most recommendations (prosecutions, full compensation, structural reforms) remain largely unimplemented.
