16 hours in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on an Ethiopian Airlines layover — with no map, no internet and one $100 note. Ethiopia is my country #28 and my first in Africa.
On my Mumbai → Addis Ababa flight (ET 611), the airline gave me a free transit hotel for the long layover. So instead of sleeping at the airport, I walked into the city: dodged napkin sellers, hunted for a currency exchange (official rate vs the parallel market), met Lucy — the famous 3.2-million-year-old skeleton at the National Museum of Ethiopia — got stuck in traffic at Merkato, Africa's biggest open market, and ate roasted corn on the roadside before racing back for my 11:15 PM flight.
