Afi, Wadi Al Maawil | Exploring Oman’s Hidden Heritage Village

Hidden in Wadi Al Maawil, less than an hour from Muscat, Afi is a lesser-known Omani heritage village where traditional architecture, falaj irrigation, agriculture and everyday village life come together. In this travel documentary, we explore the recently developed Afi Heritage Walkway, where traditional Omani architecture, palm plantations, agricultural gardens, the Washahi Falaj, local food and historic settlements come together. The highlight of the visit is Hujrat Al Sheikh, a historic fortified settlement surrounded by defensive walls, towers and traditional gates. We explore its old houses, narrow passages, Quranic school, Sabla and other features that reveal how an Omani community once lived, worked and protected itself. The construction or renovation of Hujrat Al Sheikh is attributed to Sheikh Mohammed bin Bilarab bin Omar bin Bilarab bin Saif bin Omar Al-Maawali. The site is associated with a history of nearly 300 years, with the information displayed at the site referring to its latest major renovation. Along the Heritage Walkway, we also experience aspects of everyday Omani culture, including Khubz Rakhal (Omani Bread / Khubz Ragag), traditional Omani Halwa, local shops and the agricultural landscape around the falaj.
