In this documentary, we explore that journey—from the ancient traditions surrounding Krishna's birth and texts such as the Harivamsha, to temple traditions and historical inscriptions. We then follow how this tradition became part of the wider Krishna-bhakti movement and took different forms across India—from Dahi Handi in Maharashtra, to Jhulan and Janmotsav traditions in Gujarat, Laddu Gopal worship in Braj, and Krishna Jayanti traditions in South India. But there is an important distinction throughout this journey: The exact historical date of Krishna's birth remains uncertain, but the tradition of remembering and celebrating Krishna's birth has a deep and enduring history in Indian culture. And perhaps that is why, every Janmashtami night, when the cradle of Kanha is gently rocked and temple bells ring at midnight, Krishna becomes more than a question of history.
