For more than two decades, hormone replacement therapy carried the FDA's strongest warning label and millions of women over 50 were effectively talked out of a treatment that could have helped them. In this video I explain where that scare came from, why its findings were applied far more broadly than the research supported, and what has changed in the guidance since.
We cover what HRT actually is, why "you're too old" is not on its own a medical reason, why timing and the type of hormone therapy matter more than the decade you were born in, the real risks that every woman should weigh honestly, and how to have this conversation with your own doctor. Then I give you the specific questions to take into that appointment.
I've practised medicine for over 40 years. My position is not "every woman should take HRT." It's this: the decision was taken away from a generation of women, and it should be theirs again made with a doctor who knows their history, their family risk and their bone health.
Are you too old for hormone replacement therapy? Dr. Michael Anderson, a senior health specialist with over 40 years of experience, explains where the FDA's boxed warning came from, why it was applied so broadly, and what has changed since. You will also get five clear questions to take to your doctor, so this becomes your decision and not a verdict.
Full summary For more than twenty years, hormone therapy products carried the FDA's strongest warning. Many women over 50 were told, or assumed, that they were too old to start. In this video, Dr. Anderson takes that scare apart without telling anyone to take hormone therapy. He explains what the Women's Health Initiative actually studied, why timing, dose, route, and personal history matter more than age alone, what the FDA changed in 2025 and 2026, and which risks are still real.
You will learn:
Where the 2002 warning came from, and who was in the study behind it
Why "you're too old" is not a medical reason on its own, and why age still matters
What changed when the FDA began removing boxed warnings, and which warning remains
The real risks, including breast cancer, stroke, and blood clots, and who should not take hormone therapy
The four dials that shape your risk: timing, dose, route, and your own history
Five questions to ask your doctor, and what to do if the answer is no
If you have been asking whether hormone replacement therapy is safe, whether you should take hormone replacement therapy, or what hormone therapy for women over 60 really involves, this video walks through it in plain language.
