I used to wonder who these people were, free-roaming alone in the middle of a working day. Until I became one of them. Work schedules in China stretch past 9-to-6 on both ends, so 4pm is a strange hour to be outside. Rush hour has not started, but the restaurants have already fired up. I stopped working this year, so I have started going out at exactly that hour and eating before everyone else arrives. This is what my ordinary day look like. Quick and convenient is what it takes to survive in modern China. But people always offer a bit more than that.
