The Cyrillic script used today across a large stretch of eastern Europe and central Asia was developed and spread outward from Bulgaria — a far more durable legacy than the two empires that produced it, which are much less well known than the writing system itself.
The film opens with an unusual merger: a Turkic people settling on the lower Danube and blending with the Slavic population already living there, producing a state with a Turkic ruling name and a Slavic spoken language, which Byzantium recognised only reluctantly.
The pivotal decision comes in the ninth century — conversion to Christianity, and with it the harder question of which church and which liturgical language to use. The arrival of Cyril and Methodius's disciples, expelled from elsewhere, and the schools they founded at Preslav and Ohrid, is where the film spends its longest single stretch, because the script that came out of those schools is the empire's actual lasting achievement, by a wide margin over anything military.
The long rivalry with Byzantium, the peak of Bulgarian power under Simeon, and the eventual conquest that ended the first empire form the film's middle section. A century and a half of Byzantine rule follows, then a successful revolt establishes the second empire, which dominates much of the Balkans before fragmenting under Ottoman pressure.
It closes on what survived five centuries of Ottoman rule afterward — mainly in the monasteries, and in the language itself.
