Yankees fan interference, 1996 vs 2026: same stadium, opposite outcome. In 1996, a 12-year-old reached over the right-field wall at Yankee Stadium, turned a Derek Jeter fly ball into a home run, and became part of Yankees postseason legend. On October 7, 2026, a fan reached over the left-field wall on an Anthony Volpe drive in ALDS Game 3. This time replay review overturned the home run, ruled spectator interference, and gave Volpe an RBI double. The Rays won 4–3 and swept the Yankees. We break down the play, the replay ruling and the rule behind it, the 1996 Jeffrey Maier game, and why the two moments ended so differently. Then you make the call. Was the 2026 call right?
