Day 1 | From Research to Reality: Sustainable Agriculture & NetZero Livelihoods | SAU–HOOPO
May 13, 2026 | Sindh Agriculture University, Tandojam, Pakistan
How can scientific research, ethical investment and entrepreneurship transform Pakistan's rural communities?
Day One of the SAU–HOOPO Collaborative Workshop, organized by the Faculty of Crop Protection, Sindh Agriculture University (SAU), in partnership with HOOPO Canada, brought together academic leaders, researchers, students and innovators to explore sustainable agriculture, technology and rural economic empowerment.
The workshop highlighted HOOPO's vision of transforming Pakistan's $16 billion agricultural poverty trap into a thriving, commercially sustainable rural business ecosystem.
Leadership & Keynote Messages
🎓 Prof. Dr. Altaf Ali Siyal | Vice Chancellor, SAU
The Vice Chancellor commended HOOPO Canada's contributions to carbon awareness, moringa cultivation, water conservation and community development. He emphasized regenerative agriculture, livestock-based livelihoods and the importance of universities becoming centers of innovation and entrepreneurship.
Key Message: Universities must become centers of innovation, entrepreneurship, applied research and community transformation—not merely institutions awarding degrees.
🎓 Prof. Dr. Mobeen Ahmed Lodhi | Dean, Faculty of Crop Protection
Dr. Mobeen highlighted the SAU–HOOPO partnership's achievements in sustainable agriculture, moringa-based nutrition, Qurbani meat distribution, Ramadan initiatives and climate resilience.
Key Message: University–community partnerships must translate agricultural research into practical solutions for food security, environmental sustainability and rural prosperity.
🌱 Shasta | Regenerative Agriculture & Permaculture
Drawing on her University of Toronto experience, Shasta emphasized connecting researchers, practitioners and policymakers. She explored how permaculture and regenerative agriculture can address soil degradation, biodiversity loss and unsustainable farming.
Key Message: Bridge scientific research and practice through nature-based solutions that restore ecosystems and improve rural livelihoods.
💡 Naseer Qureshi | President, HOOPO Canada
Naseer introduced the $16 billion agricultural investment opportunity and HOOPO's Graze-to-Own model, describing how ethical investment and commercially compensated services can empower farmers, students and researchers.
He presented an indicative investment of USD $122,000 per GTO cluster.
Key Message: Transform agricultural exploitation into economic opportunity by connecting science, investment and entrepreneurship.
🐄 Abdul Basit | Founder, Animal Passport
Abdul Basit introduced AI-powered livestock identification using unique animal muzzle patterns, describing research involving approximately 8,000 animals.
Key Message: Permanent digital animal identities can improve livestock traceability, security, insurance verification and scientific management.
🎓 Malik Gulistan | Banking & Rural Entrepreneurship
Drawing on four decades of banking experience, Malik Gulistan encouraged students to develop practical skills, use Google Classroom and pursue entrepreneurship.
Key Message: Empower young professionals to learn, innovate, earn and deliver modern agricultural services to smallholder farmers.
SAU–HOOPO Initiatives in Action
🌿 Plant for Prosperity (P4P)
Moringa cultivation, biochar, pitcher irrigation, living hedges and student entrepreneurship demonstrate how regenerative agriculture can generate income while restoring the environment.
The workshop recognized contributions from Dr. Waheed, Dr. Meher and participating SAU students.
🥩 Qurbani to Nutrition (Q2N)
Hygienic meat processing, preservation and organized distribution help improve nutritional access for vulnerable families while creating paid community service opportunities.
🐄 Graze-to-Own (GTO)
A five-year livestock development model combining ethical investment, improved breeding, scientific animal management and a pathway to productive livestock ownership.
🌍 Carbon Neutral Villages (CNV)
An integrated framework connecting climate awareness, regenerative agriculture, scientific innovation and sustainable rural livelihoods.
The Day One Takeaway
The true value of agricultural research lies in improving lives beyond the university campus.
