Between 1962 and 2007, the NTSB record shows 136 in-flight structural failures in Beechcraft Model 35 V-tail Bonanzas and zero in the straight-tail Model 33. Aviation Consumer's 1979 study put the V-tail at 0.65 breakups per 100,000 flight hours against 0.03 for the straight-tail Models 33 and 36.
This forensic breakdown follows the V-tail from its 1947 launch to the 1986 Department of Transportation report Beech went to federal court to suppress, the 1987 wind tunnel and flight tests that found the tail short of certification strength in one corner of the envelope, and emergency AD 87-20-02 with Beech Service Bulletin 2188 and the stabilizer reinforcement kit owners call the cuff.
Then we open the ruddervator half of the problem: AD 94-20-04, which covers 10,200 U.S. airplanes and requires a rebalance after any repaint or repair, and three flutter and breakup cases near Lafayette, Georgia, Longview, Washington, and Selma, California.
If you own or are shopping for a V-tail Bonanza, this is the pre-buy check that matters: the AD 87-20-02 kit entry, the last ruddervator balance numbers after paint, and the straight-tail conversion STC SA2149CE.
