Gaming Roundtable #271 - Star Wars Is BACK?! Disney AI, PS5 Jailbreak & Xbox LABS

Star Wars: Galactic Racer is here, Disney and Epic are reportedly going "AI first," the PS5 jailbreak scene is exploding, and Xbox just announced one of its strangest experiments yet. Welcome to Gaming Roundtable #271. ⭐ STAR WARS: GALACTIC RACER Star Wars gaming is getting interesting again. Galactic Racer is finally here, and members of the Roundtable have been putting time into this runs-based, high-stakes racing game set in the Outer Rim. Is it actually good? Does the roguelike-style structure work for a racing game? Can it capture some of that magic people still associate with classic Star Wars racing games while doing something completely different? And after years of wildly different results from Star Wars games... Is Star Wars gaming finally BACK? 🤖 DISNEY + EPIC GO "AI FIRST" Then things get complicated. Epic has reportedly delayed its upcoming collaboration with Disney while pushing the project toward an "AI first" production model. AI-generated or AI-assisted code. AI-assisted art workflows. Faster development. Potentially smaller teams. There's an enormous debate happening around what AI means for game development — and this might be one of the biggest examples yet. Does AI give developers new tools to build bigger, more ambitious games? Or are publishers going to use it primarily as another way to cut costs and reduce creative teams? And what happens when companies managing brands like Star Wars and Marvel start experimenting heavily with this technology? 🎮 THE PS5 JAILBREAK IS GETTING WILD The PS5 homebrew scene has taken a huge leap forward. We've now seen everything from emulation and legacy PlayStation support to Xbox games and Xbox Cloud Gaming running on jailbroken PS5 hardware. And then there's the piracy side. Homebrew storefronts. Thousands of downloadable games. Sony fighting exploits through firmware updates. The line between preservation, experimentation and outright piracy is getting harder to ignore. So where SHOULD that line be? And why are homebrew developers unlocking functionality that console manufacturers themselves aren't officially providing? 🧪 WHAT IS XBOX LABS?! Xbox has announced a new experimental initiative called XBOX LABS. And this might be one of the strangest — and potentially most interesting — things Microsoft has done in years. Xbox says the team will experiment with emerging technologies that challenge some of the basic assumptions of gaming. Games running on hardware they weren't designed for. Older games finding new life. Browser-based gaming. Players becoming creators and co-creators. AI helping rebuild, translate and potentially transform software. Microsoft says the goal is to build in the open, experiment, and share what it learns with developers. But that raises A LOT of questions. What happens to traditional console exclusivity if software becomes increasingly hardware-agnostic? What happens to game preservation? What happens when AI can help port, remix or reconstruct games? And how does Xbox protect its intellectual property while simultaneously encouraging experimentation that challenges traditional ownership models? This week might be less about "who won the console war" and more about whether the entire idea of a console ecosystem is starting to change. Pull up a chair. Now let's talk it out at The Gaming Roundtable. 👇 SOUND OFF: Have you played Star Wars: Galactic Racer? How do you feel about Disney and Epic leaning into AI development? Where do you draw the line between PS5 homebrew and piracy?
