A 1,300-foot snake carved into a hilltop in southern Ohio — the largest serpent effigy on Earth — and after a century of study, archaeologists still cannot agree on who built it or when. The two leading radiocarbon dates sit more than a thousand years apart. This is the story of the Great Serpent Mound: an earthwork with a coiled tail and an open mouth wrapped around an oval, aligned so its head points at the summer-solstice sunset — built on top of a 300-million-year-old meteorite impact crater, the only place in Ohio where the bedrock is violently scrambled. We trace the dating war between the Adena date (around 300 BC) and the Fort Ancient date (around AD 1070), why there are no burials inside the serpent to settle it, the astronomical alignments, and why the ground it sits on may be the whole point. You will walk away understanding why Serpent Mound is the most argued-over earthwork in North America — not because the evidence is missing, but because the evidence points two different directions at once. ⏱ CHAPTERS (draft — re-time to the final render before publishing) 0:00 The Snake on the Hill 2:00 The Largest Effigy on Earth 5:00 A Dating War, 1,300 Years Wide 9:00 No Bodies to Date 13:00 A Head Aimed at the Solstice 18:00 Built on a Crater 24:00 Why No One Can Agree 📚 SOURCES • Ohio History Connection — Who Built Serpent Mound? / The Snake's Tale: How Old Is Serpent Mound? — https://ohiohistory.org • Lepper, B. — critique of the 2014 Adena re-dating (organic sediment vs charcoal; no Adena effigy/serpent tradition) • Romain, W.
