Ethical Relativism: Strengths & Weaknesses | Moral Relativism, Cultural Diversity & Universalism | UPSC GS4 | Lecture 78
What are the strengths and weaknesses of Ethical Relativism? Does moral relativism promote tolerance, cultural humility and respect for diversity? Can it prevent cultural imperialism and ethnocentrism? At the same time, does Ethical Relativism make it difficult to condemn slavery, genocide, discrimination or human-rights violations? Can relativism explain moral progress? Where should administrators draw the line between cultural sensitivity and universal ethical standards?
In this UPSC Ethics GS Paper 4 lecture, we critically examine the major strengths and limitations of Ethical Relativism. Relativist approaches draw attention to genuine moral diversity and challenge the assumption that one society's moral standards are automatically superior to those of others. They can encourage cultural humility, tolerance and sensitivity to context. However, major criticisms include difficulty explaining moral progress, universal human rights and condemnation of harmful practices, along with the risk of turning cultural acceptance into moral indifference.
