How did ancient humans survive broken bones, infected wounds and toothaches with no doctors, no hospitals and no antibiotics?
In this video, we look at what archaeology says about prehistoric medicine, from healed thigh bones and the Neanderthal known as Shanidar 1, to skulls with surgical holes and the medicine kit Ötzi the Iceman carried across the Alps. 🏔️
Researchers believe that early humans survived serious injuries largely through teamwork, simple splints, plant knowledge and care for the injured. Some details are still debated, and we point out where.
⏱️ In this video:
• Why a broken leg could be deadly in the Stone Age
• Healed fractures and what they suggest about group care
• Shanidar 1, the Neanderthal who lived with severe injuries
• Plants, poplar bark, mold and early painkillers
